The Wholesome Silly Season Support Guide
Okay, let's be honest. It's been a really tough year for all of us and although summer is here some of us might not feel quite ready to get back into a social life. On the contrary, some of us desperately are ready. With many festivals being postponed it can feel like there isn’t much to look forward to over the New Year period BUT, we disagree and here’s why:
Many of us have rescheduled plans so that we can be with friends over NY whether it’s just a small party, time away at a family bach or even just staying at home. This has opened a whole bunch of opportunities to work on relationships with ourselves and others - yes we’re going deep and wholesome with this one.
We’ve put together some small suggestions to help make the New Year period as stress free and rewarding as possible. It’s a time to recharge our batteries and take a deep breath. So with that being said we’re heading into our first tip…
Breathe
Yup, you’ve heard it before but breathing is one of the most underrated forms of creating calm within one’s body and mind. It can slow our heart rate down, bring us into the present moment and more. Did you know that by taking deep breaths you’re controlling your sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is the body's rapid involuntary response to dangerous or stressful situations shown in the form of anxiety! So, here’s a tip: Inhale for 4 seconds and exhale for 7. The longer and more controlled your exhale is, the more you’ll help bring your heart rate down.
Practice Gratitude
Take a moment right now, think about someone, something or a place that you’re grateful for, now close your eyes. Whether you like it or not, gratitude creates instant dopamine - the happy hormone. If you’re feeling down or just not quite where you want to be, take a moment and have a little look around. If you’re feeling extra great, then you can express that gratitude.
Create Quality Connections
After spending A LOT of time indoors, with a select amount of humans, it can be overwhelming heading back into a full on social life but it doesn’t have to be if you think about it this way: over the summer period you’re creating memories and connections with your loved ones that you will cherish forever, yup that’s deep.
Be kind to yourself
Last but not least, one of the most important tips of all. Be gentle, forgiving and kind to yourself. I know it sounds easier than it is but just remember, you’re easing yourself back into festivities, socializing and the big wide world. Say to yourself ‘it’s okay to feel this way’ because I guarantee you, everyone feels that way too and completely understands.
